Frame restoration

When I removed the 4 mounting bushings and bolts holding the frame to body  I realized the area of the frame  where the bolts/bushings went thru was completely rusted  and I needed to cut out the rusted area and weld in new metal. Fortunately for the frame this was all the repair needed.  I sandblasted the frame and completely cleaned it and applied POR15  rust preventor and topcoat.  Even with frame off that was a HUGE job.

Here's the recommended prep steps for POR15

1. Remove all loose rust, paint, grease etc. from parts to be coated. Do not remove rust down to shiny metal, POR15 (Paint Over Rust)  chemically bonds to rusted metal and forms a rock- hard, non-porous coating that won't crack, chip, or peel. It keeps moisture away from metal with a coating that is strengthened by continued exposure to moisture. 

2. Degrease the surface with a water-based Cleaner Degreaser. The surface must keep wet with degreaser for 10-15 minutes and then rinsed with water before next step.

3.  Neutralize rust and etch with Metal Prep. Again the surface must stay wet with metal etch for 10-15 minutes and then rinsed with water.  

4. After thorough washing and drying, coat with POR-15 Rust Preventive Coating, right onto the rust! 

5. Topcoat with Top Coat, 2K Industrial Urethane, or other UV safe opaque paint of your choice. 

Small parts are pretty easy to process using POR15 but large areas can be a challenge, keeping large areas wet with etch or degreaser and rinsing with water is difficult especially if your doing the work indoors especially during winter months.
